Behind the Build: Sydney’s World Pride Hoarding with Peter Andrews

When Growth Built and Sydney City Council needed a trusted signage partner for a large-scale hoarding wrap on Oxford Street during Sydney’s World Pride Festival, they turned to Mesh Direct. Sales + Ops manager Peter Andrews led the project, which was a challenging, high-visibility install that demanded precision, creativity, and serious on-site problem-solving.

Below, Peter takes us through the job from start to finish.

Q1: How did the enquiry come in and what was the request?

Peter: It came through as an inbound call requesting a full wrap of the B-Class hoarding on three blocks along Oxford Street, Darlinghurst, featuring Sydney’s World Pride artwork.

Q2: How did you handle the request?

Peter: I organised to visit the site immediately. That allowed me to survey the hoarding in person and provide a fast, accurate quote.

Q3: What were the challenges or unique requirements of the job?

Peter: The sheer scale was significant, three city blocks on a steep street with heavy foot traffic. There was also an active bus zone right in front of the building, which limited access and meant we couldn’t store machinery on site. On top of that, this was a major Sydney’s World Pride installation with multiple Sydney City Council stakeholders involved, and the artwork itself was complex. It needed to be carefully adjusted to suit an angled layout.

Q4: How did you solve these challenges?

Peter: We held extensive communications with both the customer and council. There were repeated site meetings with stakeholders to make sure every step of the process met safety and design requirements.

Q5: Were there any specific details that needed extra consideration?

Peter: Definitely. The limited access times were one of the biggest challenges, everything had to be coordinated down to the minute.

Q6: What was your solution?

Peter: We pre-cut and pre-drilled the sail track system so the B-Class fascia banners could be installed in record time. It streamlined the entire process and kept us within the tight access windows.

Q7: What was the result?

Peter: The installation deadline was met, the finish quality was excellent, and all stakeholders were happy with the result.

Q8: Any follow-up or post-installation notes?

Peter: The best part? The installation is still in place two and a half years later, a testament to the quality of our work and materials.
