Preserving a Landmark During Construction with Carrflex Premium Mesh
When scaffolding goes up around a heritage icon, the visual impact can be significant.
For this exciting project, Mesh Direct’s Peter Andrews delivered a custom heritage building wrap for Cascade Brewery in South Hobart, carefully printing the look of the original façade onto Carrflex Premium Fire Retardant Mesh to maintain the building’s historic streetscape presence during works.
This project combined technical problem solving, heritage sensitivity and grand format design + print precision, delivered interstate to Tasmania.

The Art Brief: Replicate An Iconic Heritage Façade
Cascade Brewery is Australia’s oldest continuously operating brewery, and its historic South Hobart building is a landmark.
The goal wasn’t just to cover scaffolding, but to:
- Recreate the look of the original heritage building
- Maintain visual continuity during construction
- Meet fire compliance requirements
- Withstand Tasmanian weather conditions
- Deliver a seamless, high-impact finish
This wasn’t standard scaffold mesh. This was architectural illusion at scale.
The Challenge: Designing For A Moving Target
Due to the interstate location, we worked from diagrams and evolving scaffold plans rather than conducting a physical pre-measure.
As the scaffold structure was built, changes occurred. Additional structural elements were introduced during construction that didn’t exist in the original façade drawings, meaning artwork couldn’t be finalised until the scaffold was fully complete.
That meant:
- Gaps where no artwork existed
- Architectural elements misaligned
- Sections of the building needing digital reconstruction
Our design team recreated missing architectural details so the printed mesh would look authentic from street level, not like a temporary banner.

The Solution: Collaboration & Craftsmanship
Progressive Measuring – Peter worked closely with the client to take updated measurements as each section of scaffold was completed. This allowed production to move forward without compromising accuracy.
Expert Heritage Artwork Adaptation – Aimee meticulously adjusted artwork to:
- Match brickwork lines and windows
- Align architectural proportions
- Create seamless transitions across panel joins
- Fill newly introduced structural voids
The result was a wrap that visually reinstated the building’s character, even while fully scaffolded.

The Product: Carrflex Premium Fire Retardant Mesh
For a project of this scale and public visibility, we specified Carrflex Premium Fire Retardant Mesh.
Why It Was Critical:
- Fire retardant compliant for construction standards
- Strong airflow to reduce wind load
- High print clarity for architectural detail
- Durable for multi-week exposure
- Suitable for reinforced installation methods
When printing detailed heritage brickwork and architectural lines, material quality matters. Low-grade mesh simply wouldn’t deliver the realism required.

Installation: Three Days in Tasmanian Conditions
With no local team experienced in large-scale heritage scaffold wraps, we mobilised our specialist Sydney installers to Tasmania alongside Peter Andrews to oversee the install.
Installation Specifications:
- Reinforced eyelets
- Heavy-duty cable ties
- High tensile fence wire across the face to minimise billowing
- 3-day installation timeline
Day three brought high winds and cold conditions, classic Hobart weather, but the team completed the install safely and professionally.
(There may also have been a speeding ticket along the way. We’ll say that’s dedication to delivering on time.)

The Result: A Heritage Facade, Preserved in Print
Instead of a stark scaffold interruption, passersby saw:
✔ A continuation of the original heritage building
✔ Architectural detail maintained
✔ Professional, high-quality presentation
✔ Compliance with fire and construction standards
For high-profile, historically significant sites, presentation matters.
This project demonstrates how custom scaffold wraps can protect not just buildings, but brand reputation and community perception.
