Luminous Shadow at Artspace

When Art, Language and Light Meet, Mesh Direct Helps Bring It to the Street

Some projects stay with you long after installation day, and Luminous Shadow at Artspace is one of them. We were engaged to produce and install two large-format banners for this powerful new commission — the first collaborative work in Artspace’s Banner Series.

Created by Abu Dhabi–based artists Ramin Haerizadeh, Rokni Haerizadeh and Hesam Rahmanian, in collaboration with Australian artist Angie Goto, the banners translate an intricate conceptual world into bold, public-facing artworks. And bringing that vision into physical form was a privilege.

A Concept Rooted in Philosophy and Visual Poetry

Luminous Shadow draws inspiration from many sources, but it begins with an idea from the Sufi mystic Ibn ʿArabi: that darkness is not the opposite of light, but its origin — a generative space where meaning, form and possibility start to emerge.

That concept of “black light” guides the work. Instead of treating darkness as emptiness, the artists explore it as a fertile realm where language and gesture come together before they fully take shape.

Their visual world also connects to the fantastical imagery found in Zakariya al-Qazwini’s 13th-century manuscript Wonders of Creatures, adding mythology, symbolism and playfulness into the mix. And woven through the entire collaboration is Auslan, transforming text, movement and expression into a shared visual language.

The result is a kind of visual poem — layered, expressive, and open to interpretation.

Bringing the Artwork into Public Space

Our role was to take this rich conceptual universe and translate it into durable, vivid grand-format print.

The banners were produced on premium materials to ensure depth of colour, clarity of detail and longevity on display. Once printed, our install team fitted them to the façade of the Artspace building, a beautiful heritage structure that adds its own texture to the final presentation.

Seeing contemporary art, philosophy and sign language meet through print is exactly the kind of project we love being part of. It reminds us how powerful public art can be when it moves out of the gallery and into the streetscape.

Abu-Dhabi based artists Ramin Haerizadeh, Rokni Haerizadeh and Hesam Rahmanian created a short video of their ongoing collaboration with Australian-based artist Angie Goto for the Luminous Shadow Banner Series commission. The video includes the visual letters exchanged between the artists and sheds light on how their dialogue eventually formed the work for the Banner Series. SOURCE LINK
