The phenomenal opportunity to create Building Wrap for Sydney Town Hall, the organizer reached out to Mesh Direct in October 2020. Extensive refurbishments to the facade of the historic Sydney Town Hall have been an important project for the city in order to ensure the magnificent sandstone building can be appreciated for many generations to come.

The Challenge

Designing and printing a building wrap for Town Hall in a short timeframe provided 3 key challenges. Firstly, the complexity of the artwork to ensure the wrap was as realistic as possible in terms of colour, scale and a seamless overall finish. In addition, the building was surrounded by many lifting bays which did not mirror the building’s facade. This created a challenge to ensure the visual aesthetic of the wrap was replicated. In addition, due to its size, ensuring the wrap would sustain high winds was a significant challenge.

For the base of the site, hoardings were needed to conceal the much anticipated on-site conservation process. A pivotal component of the refurbishment project was sustainability, and this extended to the singage solutions. As a result, a key consideration was finding eco-friendly options.

The Product

For the first stage of the project, EcoVinyl was used to enclose the site as a sustainable hoarding solution. Ecovinyl is composed of 100% recyclable billboard skins maintaining an excellent print quality.

Mesh Direct chose to use fire-rated mesh with rated tie points and straps to ensure a secure and engineered solution to the aforementioned challenges. The fire-rated mesh is highly durable with a fantastic print finish while rated anchoring points and straps ensure a sturdy attachment to the building. Ensuring many anchoring points also guaranteed that the wrap could be installed with ease. In terms of the artwork, designs were created in stages to ensure it mirrored the changing positions of the scaffold.
