The Project

Mesh Direct was commissioned by Precon Project Management and Auckland Council to install a huge banner on the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki building. The Auckland Art Gallery Building Wrap project involved displaying an impressive piece of indigenous artwork, enhancing the gallery’s visibility and cultural presence in Auckland, New Zealand.

The Challenge

The project faced several challenges, including:

Harsh Weather Conditions: Auckland’s cold, windy, and rainy climate made planning the installation challenging.

Building Constraints: The building was wrapped in plastic, complicating the attachment of the banners.

Location Restrictions: Situated in a bustling part of Auckland, local authorities and legislation prohibited work during the day. This meant that installation needed to begin at 11:00 pm, requiring road closures and completion within a strict timeframe before the road was reopened in the morning.

Equipment Needs: The huge 35m x 8m banner required three boom lifts for proper installation which meant a lot of man power but also precision and accuracy.

The Solution

Mesh Direct has over a decade of experience in all things signage and installation which meant our team met the project with a strategic and innovative approach. The stunning Indigenous artwork by artist Graham Tipene was printed on our durable Banner Mesh product. Six giant panels, each 8 metres high and totalling 35 metres across, were used to cover the building. Mesh Direct’s team of scaffolders constructed an external frame around the wrapped building, enabling secure attachment of the banner. Reinforced pockets were incorporated at the back of the banner to provide additional support against the area’s harsh weather conditions.

The Result

The results were exceptional. The Indigenous artwork, printed locally, was displayed beautifully, enhancing the cultural ambience of the Auckland Art Gallery. Despite the challenges, Mesh Direct’s team of expert installers completed the installation within the tight six-hour window, working efficiently overnight.

Both Precon Project Management and Auckland Council were extremely pleased with the outcome, highlighting Mesh Direct’s ability to deliver outstanding results under demanding conditions. Auckland Art Gallery Building Wrap not only showcased our technical expertise but also our commitment to celebrating and promoting local art and culture.
